DryFire

Typical DryFire feedback

Note: with DryFire you do not shoot at the PC screen - it is not a game!

You acquire the moving laser target, swing through it, fire and follow through - just as if you were firing at a real clay.

You use your own shotgun to shoot at a "clay" (in the form of the laser spot) moving across the wall in front of you and following exactly the same angular trajectory, at the same angular speed, as the real thing. The PC screen merely reports what you have done.

This screen-grab was taken after shooting on-report doubles. Details of the target are:

  • There are two traps at ground level 20m in front of the shooter.
  • Trap 1 launches almost vertically - a springing teal.
  • Trap 2 launches 45 degrees to the left of straight ahead with the clay travelling 60m and passing through an imaginary hoop location which is 5m high, 20m out from the trap.
  • Trap 1 is launched first - the shooter hit this clay (thought the clay was not in the centre of the shot-pattern) when it was 25.41m from him. He took 0.74s to take the shot after calling "Pull"
  • Trap 2 was then launched - again the shooter hit this clay (again, not in the centre of the shot-pattern) when it was 37.26m from him. He took 0.90s to take the second shot after calling "Pull"
  • The dashed yellow lines shows the trajectories of the shots - the dashed orange lines show the trajectories of the clays.
  • You can't see it well on this image but after each shot you clearly see the clay and its location in relation to the pellet cloud.

So, this show the result of an on-report double with a springing teal as the first target followed by fast going-away quartering target.

Do you get this level of feedback when you are shooting outside? Maybe - if you hit both targets! However, what feedback do you get when you hit only one - or neither?

With DryFire you get detailed feedback every time - hit or miss.

Note: the shooting is not that clever - the top left of the screen near the green traffic light shows that out of 14 shots the shooter has only managed to hit 4! Unfortunately, DryFire is just as hard as the real thing!

How DryFire reports the result of a shot

DryFire always reports the result of a shot as seen by the shooter.

A straight-away trap target

This is a trap target rising directly in front of the shooter and going straight away.

The dashed blue line shows the direction the clay is travelling at the point when the shot cloud (the grey blob) is closest to it.

The second distance reported by DryFire is always one perpendicular to the first one - as shown by the magenta line.

DryFire has reported that the centre of the shot pattern is 0.42m head of the clay (since the clay is rising) and 0.83m to the right.

A quartering target to the left

In this case the clay is rising and travelling towards the left. The direction of the clay's travel, at the point when the shot cloud is closest to it, is shown by the dashed blue line.

The magenta line is perpendicular to the direction of travel of the clay.

DryFire has reported that the centre of the shot pattern is 1.74m head of the clay (since the clay is rising) and 0.41m below - i.e. below the direction of travel.
